Objective£º This study investigated the relationships between character-temperament and academic achievement in high school students.
Method£º The study subjects were 205 first-year students of a high school during one academic year(2004). Gradepoint averages(GPA) from the second semester of the first year of high school were obtained as a measure of academic achievement, and all participants completed the Temperament and Character Inventory, Beck depression Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.
Results£º In general, our results revealed novelty seeking and reward dependence(RD) were negatively correlated with GPA, and persistence(P) was positively correlated with GPA. If data were divided by gender, only RD was negatively correlated with GPA in boys, and P and state anxiety were positively correlated with GPA in girls. In stepwise regression anaysis, RD and P were significant predictive variables for GPA in boys, and trait anxiety was only predictive variable in girls.
Conclusion£º We were able to delineate relationships between character-temperament and academic achievement.
